From tree to furniture...

DSC_0345_edited.jpg

The museum of woodworking machinery and hand tools is a unique museum in France. It was born thanks to the generosity of the heirs of former woodworkers: sawyer, turner, cabinetmaker, carpenter, sculptor... in 1999.

A story initiated by the town of Pont-de-Beauvoisin (Isère), supported and completed by volunteers.

A traditional furniture industry, nationally-listed quality furniture manufacturing still employed more than 400 workers in 1922.

Since 1950 a crisis has befallen this industry and today there are only about fifty workers living from wood, the factories have disappeared and the craftsmen can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

The museum tells the story of this industry, recreating the atmosphere and ambiance of a workshop from the first half of the 20th century.

The machines, animated by life-size mannequins and with sound, evoke the development of furniture from the work of the sawyer to the assembly of the furniture.

Each stage of production is reconstructed.

We better understand the value of this furniture by discovering that it takes no less than a year of work to make one.

The museum is located in the center of the city, in place of the old Municipal Theatre.
